Fellowship and Romans 14

The Bounds of Christian Fellowship
An Introduction
Stan Cox

Introduction:

Fellowship with God has always been contingent upon our obedience to His will

    Isaiah 59:1-15
    1 John 3:2-10

The attempt of this short study is to determine the bounds and practical aspects of Christian fellowship.

  • In this regard, we must first assert that our fellowship with God and brethren is contingent upon our walking "in the light"

  • To contend that fellowship can be found in sinful practices and doctrines will necessitate that either:
    1. God is willing to have fellowship with those practicing sin, or...
    2. God expects His children to have fellowship with those He himself will not receive (cf. 2 Corinthians 6:14 - 7:2)

Finally, I would only add my belief in the importance of this study. I am not a prophet, but I am convinced that there is a very real danger of apostasy present in the conditions of the day. And I believe that this question is a fundamental one which will divide brethren if sufficient teaching is not done. We must not allow ourselves to become content and lulled into sleep. Satan has always sought to divide God's people. He is not idle.

The last great division of God's people took place 40 years ago. Our generation has not seen such a division, and perhaps we have grown lax. There is, increasingly, a liberal attitude among God's people that would tolerate compromise with the world. There is a distaste for militancy, and a desire for peace at any price.

We must be careful not to be so militant and uncompromising as to exclude those who God accepts. However, we must also guard against tolerance of those God would exclude. Hence, our attempt to study this issue. May God open our hearts and minds to His word during this study.
