Tom Robert's exegesis of Rom. 14

Note: Descriptions of what is contained in the above transcripts can be found below

Don Patton Transcripts

Much misinformation exists regarding Don Patton's exegesis of Romans 14, and the views he holds on the bounds of Christian fellowship. The material at this site is designed to set the record straight. Two things must be remembered when a man's convictions are examined:

  1. It is wrong to accuse any man without thoroughly examining his teaching, and being sure of what he teaches.

  2. It is wrong to accuse any man of wrongdoing in exposing another's teaching if he has examined closely the material, and you have not.

Please read all of the material at this site. I would encourage you to first read the background information, supplied by Stan Cox, so that you will have enough understanding of the issue to recognize the purpose of making this material available.

If you have any questions, feel free to email Stan Cox by clicking here. He will attempt to answer any questions you may have.

Background

Stan Cox gives commentary regarding the events which led to:

    • Bobby Holmes' public characterization of Don Patton as teaching false doctrine regarding the bounds of Christian Fellowship.
    • Don Patton's charges of misrepresentation in the matter.
    • Don Patton's exegesis of Romans 14 in which he publicly espouses the belief that under certain circumstances Christians can be received (without time limitation) even if they espouse false doctrine or engage in sinful activities.
    • A Question and Answer period following Don's exegesis where his views received a broader examination
    • An exchange in the February 16, 1995 Guardian of Truth Magazine between Don Patton and Tom Roberts regarding their differences on the fellowship issue. In this exchange, Don repeats his claim of being misrepresented.

In this background summary, Stan gives certain characterizations of the events. Obviously, he believes that Don Patton's claims of misrepresentation are disingenuous and untrue. The remainder of the material is presented without bias, as it was recorded and transcribed.

Transcript 1

This is the transcript of the original sermon preached in 1990, at the Judson Road congregation in Longview, TX. The chart of 100 items is inserted into the transcript at the first place it was introduced in the sermon.

Chart

This is the chart of 100 items Don Patton introduced into his sermon in 1990. As much of Don's objections regarding the representation regarding this sermon revolves around the use of his chart, excerpts from the lesson where the chart is referred to follows in this document. For a full text of the sermon transcript, see Transcript 1 above. The reader should be able to see from the excerpts whether Don Patton tied the chart of 100 items with his exegesis of Romans 14.

Transcript 2

On August 30, 1994 Bobby Holmes exposed Don Patton's teaching on fellowship in a study at Grand Prairie, TX. The study was attended by a fairly large group of preachers and Christians from different churches in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. A tape of Bobby Holmes' lesson exists, but it has never been transcribed. Following Bobby Holmes' lesson Don Patton was given an opportunity to respond. This document is a transcript of his initial response that day, August 30, 1994.

Transcript 3

Don Patton spoke on September 15, 1998 for an extended period regarding claimed misrepresentations of his position. Unfortunately, the tape of the speech is unintelligible, and a transcript of this session could not be made. In this speech, Don did not attempt to explain his position, saying that the entirety of his time would be taken up in dealing with misrepresentations. He requested an additional opportunity to give his exegesis of Romans 14. This request was granted, and he spoke at the study, again in Grand Prairie, TX, on November 10, 1994. This transcript contains his entire presentation.

Transcript 4

Following Don Patton's exegesis of Romans 14, the floor was opened for Questions and Answers. (This is customary at all of these studies). While not all of the questions were intelligible, they are represented as accurately as possible, together with Don Patton's answers. This transcript contains the entirety of the Question and Answer period that day, November 10, 1994.

Guardian of Truth Exchange

Three months later, the February 16, 1995 issue of Guardian of Truth Magazine contained an exchange between Tom Roberts and Don Patton. This change will be helpful in determining whether Don Patton takes an unscriptural position regarding Romans 14, and whether he has been misrepresented by those who have examined his teaching. This document contains the exchange which originally appeared in the GOT.

Exegesis of Romans 14

The preceding transcripts detail Don Patton's position on Romans 14. As the study is rather extensive, it is perhaps appropriate to supply the divergent view. Brother Tom Roberts has prepared a very detailed and well studied analytical exegesis of the text, in light of the current controversy. This document contains that study. You are encouraged to consider it carefully, and compare it to the exegesis done by Don Patton. The truth need not fear investigation.
